  • The French butter dish is a centuries old design that is used to keep butter fresh without refrigeration.  The butter (or margarine or just about any spread) is stored in the “lid” and you put water in the base to seal out air.  It is air that can cause butter to lose flavor (or pick up bad flavors). Click for diagram

  • The procedure is easy - take 1/4 pound (or 1/2 lb.) of butter or margarine and remove it from the refrigerator and allow it to soften to room temp.   Leaving the paper on one side, press the butter into the lid of the dish.  Or, use the back of a spoon to press the butter into the lid. Put about ½ inch water in the bottom of the butter dish.  Change the water every few days.  I recommend putting about ½ t. of salt in the water to retard the growth of any bacteria or mold for extended periods.  (The few drops of salt water you may get on your food are tasty!)

  • On exceptionally hot days, add crushed ice or ice water (or put it in the fridge).   If the butter is left out in the sun or it gets really hot in your kitchen, the butter may drop out into the water--just place in the fridge and allow the butter to chill and then begin the process again.

Since each piece is hand made and decorated they may vary from the photos.

Like all my pottery, they are lead-free, dishwasher and microwave safe and will last many years.

Size: Approx. 4" wide and 3" high.  Capacity 1/4 to 1/2 lb.
